About the Role
- Sets up, positions and operates hand and power tools such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
- Use clamps, brackets, and hangers to secure welding items and structures
- Remove slags and rough spots from workpieces by operating grinders or scrapers to ensure a smooth work surface
- Employ their knowledge of metallurgy to determine materials and equipment most suitable for a welding assignment.
- Clean and prepare workpieces using chemical solutions etc. to remove foreign matter such as grease, rust, etc.
- Use heat torches to preheat metal plates prior to welding if required.
- Cut and shape metal components to set piping joints to required procedures using grinders, power saws, or other hand tools.
- Monitor all welding processes and ensure absence of any shrinkage and distortion to materials.
- Control and turn valves or regulators to adjust for the correct use of welding equipment.
- Wear appropriate protective gear and ensure compliance with established health/safety regulations.
